Elena Marushiakova

Elena Marushiakova is a Romani studies scholar, of Slovak and Russian origin, currently living in Bulgaria, and working in the Institute for Ethnology and Folklore Studies and Ethnographic Museum at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences.
Elena Marushiakova is the president of the Gypsy Lore Society and member of the Scientific Committee of the European Academic Network on Romani Studies. She is holder of the 2009 Fulbright New Century Scholars Award from the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the U.S. Department of State and the Council for International Exchange of Scholars.
From January 2015 Elena Marushiakova is a Leverhulme Visiting Professor at the University of St Andrews.
==Research==
Marushiakova and her co-author Veselin Popov have published about Roma/Gypsies in Bulgaria, the Balkans, Central and Eastern Europe, South Caucasus and Central Asia. Their major works include the first monographic research on the history, social structure and culture of the Roma/Gypsies in Bulgaria (1997), a book on Gypsies in Ottoman Empire (2000) and a book on Roma/Gypsies on the Black Sea (2008). They lectured at universities in Germany, United Kingdom, Finland, the Czech Republic, Hungary, the USA and Australia.
They also publish in the fields of folklore and oral history – the "Studii Romani" Series. They initiated the first museum exhibition about Roma in Bulgaria and the First international museum exhibition "Roma/Gypsies in Central and Eastern Europe" in 1998/1999 in Budapest.
